A Message for the Holidays

Browncoats : Official Serenity Fan Site : forum

So, here we are. So much has happened recently and I feel this is the time to pause and reflect before the New Year starts slapping us around.
We made the movie, it has come out on DVD just in time for that odd little Christian holiday where they celebrate not being fed to lions or something. It is number one on Amazon, and the old Firefly set is crawling back up the charts like a thirsty man in the desert towards a mirage. Does this make us better than anyone else? You bet it does. But it’s not the kind of better than that causes you to look down your nose at anyone. It’s more the kind that lets you pat someone patiently on the arm and say in a sanctimonious tone, “Mm hm, it’s alright. I’ll get you a copy of the movie and you can be cool, too. Just not quite as cool as me because I’ve been a Browncoat for sometime, now.”
If you are like me, you watch the movie to assure yourself the future will be safe, you watch the extras to see old friends, and you listen to Joss’ commentary and shed a little tear over good times. Waht’s that? You don’t cry in the commentary? Well, just have an emotion chip installed, you robot, and refill your eye bags with saline.
Be well, Browncoats. Aim high, as we have all learned that nothing is impossible (except getting Jewel and Morena to stop fighting over who is prettier when we all know it’s me). Happy Holidays.

Nathan “Captain Tightpants” Fillion

I’ve been a browncoat longer than many and I’ve seen the movie 4 times now! HA! I’m automatically cooler than everyone else.

IGN: Exclusive: A Serenity Sequel?

December 1, 2005 – IGN FilmForce has heard that, although it was very disappointed in the poor boxoffice showing for Serenity, Universal may not have retired Captain Malcolm Reynolds and his renegade crew just yet.

Oh my, this is the best news I’ve heard all day!! Well, not news… but a rumor, but still cool! We can only hope! Plus, if the ratings are good, and I have a strong feeling they would be, there might be a new season of Firefly! Strike up another for the Browncoats!

Amazon.com: Serenity (Widescreen Edition): DVD

Amazon.com: Serenity (Widescreen Edition): DVD

Just thought I’d post a quick follow-up to the Serenity DVD announcement. Amazon has posted their pre-order page for the DVD, and the price is $20.99 and release date for Dec 20. One reviewer (S. Smith) is right:

Some questions for whoever created the cover art for this DVD:
-Who is the actress on the cover? It looks you have airbrushed or replaced Summer Glau, the actress who was actually in the film.
-Why is Serenity shown blowing up ships with laser beams? The ship from the series and film had no weapons.
-Why does the cover show a mob of tens of thousands of people? There is no such epic sized group anywhere in the film.

It seems like the cover art is from a different film, and not the one that I saw in theaters…

What in the hell? Oh well, its just a cover. Grab this disc ASAP!

You Just Can’t Stop Uwe Boll – Shacknews

You Just Can’t Stop Uwe Boll – Shacknews

Over the last couple weeks, hopeful gamers the internet over have been pointing to various theories suggesting that the reason the infamous Uwe Boll is making his maddening video game movies–and the reason he inexplicably seems to keep getting increasingly well-known casts and crew–is not out of some genuine love for the collision of video games and film but rather to take advantage of a German legal loophole that does not tax film investments that have not returned a profit. This basically acts as a tax haven for wealthy German investors, who can sink a given amount of money into a Boll project, confident that it will make very little profit, and basically have a place to store a few million dollars where the government can’t tax it. If the movie makes back enough–but not too much–they just earned themselves a big fat deductible.

He keeps making these shitty movies, and people keep going to see them. When are people going to learn to just boycott them? I tell you right now that I will never see another Uwe Boll movie. Never. This loophole is interesting, but if it is true, he’ll find a way around it. Smart business people always do.

Hotel Rwanda

Filed under: Journal, Movies — Matt McDougall @ 9:07 pm

There are only a handful of movies that cause such raw emotions within me… anger, sadness, fear. The true story of Hotel Rwanda is one such movie. I feel so strongly for this movie, that at only halfway through it, if you have not choked up, you have no soul. It is that strong of a movie. Moreso if you have a brief understanding of the subject matter.

The movie starts during 1994 right before the Rwandan Genocides that ultimately lead to the deaths of over 800,000 people. Yes, you read that right. You get introduced to Paul, manager at Des Mille Collines, the “Hotel Rwanda.” Soon a war breaks out among the people of Rwanda and Paul has his people take refuge in the hotel. I will say no more on this movie other than you must see it. I don’t like giving away spoilers.

Keep in mind, this is the time when William Jefferson Clinton was in office. The entire western world watched and did nothing while over 800,000 people died. With this and Black Hawk Down, its easy to see why I do not like Bill Clinton. The only question left is why?

DVD Times – Serenity (R1) in December – Artwork & Menus added

“Universal Studios Home Video have announced the Region 1 DVD release of Serenity for 20th December 2005 priced at $29.98 SRP. A passenger with a deadly secret. Six rebels on the run. An assassin in pursuit. When the renegade crew of Serenity agrees to hide a fugitive on their ship, they find themselves in an action-packed battle between the relentless military might of a totalitarian regime who will destroy anything – or anyone – to get the girl back and the bloodthirsty creatures who roam the uncharted areas of space. But, the greatest danger of all may be on their ship. From the mind of Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) comes a new edge-of-your-seat adventure loaded with explosive battles, gripping special effects and fantastic new worlds!”

OH YES PLEASE. Serenity on DVD in December. That just made my Christmas!

Equilibrium

Filed under: Movies — Matt McDougall @ 7:40 pm

Wow. What a movie. Overall I found this movie to be quite enjoyable. I really do like dystopian stories.

Equilibrium starts off with a bang with Christian Bale playing an elite super soldier in a dystopian future where sense offenders are killed or tortured (sound like 1984?) and their contraband burned (sound like Fahrenheit 451?). The populace keeps their emotions in check by way of a drug that sounds an awful lot like our Prozac (are they trying to say something? also, sound like Brave New World?). The children are apparently trained to spot those who are “feeling”, a la the Junior Anti-Sex League or the Hitler Youth. There’s a Big Brother-like figure. There’s a load of cool action. The police even carry G36s and P90s, how cool is that?

This movie was really good, but I felt it was missing something. Maybe it was that it borrowed so much from 3 of the top dystopian classics and didn’t have all that much to offer on its own. Maybe it was the half-assed direction and special effects in a few scenes. I can’t complain too much, though, I’ve seen far too many movies with over done special effects and direction that couldn’t hold a candle to this movie.

In the end, the faults keep me from giving this a perfect score. I’ll give it a B-
