AOL founder resigns from Time Warner

Steve Case, the founder of AOL, on Monday said he has resigned from the board of Time Warner Inc. ending a painful chapter in the history of the world’s largest media company.

Its about damn time. I don’t think we’ll see any good come of this for a while, if ever… but it is better than nothing.

cre824 – USA Pre-Selection – Webdesign International Festival

Anyone want to go to this? I’m thinking about it. I first heard about it on Diggnation. Both Alex Albrecht and Kevin Rose will be there shooting an episode of Diggnation, as well as many other things going on. Competition, seminars, workshops, etc… all about webdesign. Sounds interesting. Could be cool to find out what kind of web languages to focus on learning, and gleam some ideas.. and just have an all around good time. Online registration ends November 7, so act fast!

World of Warcraft Forums – WoW Guru – The Burning Crusade, Starcraft 2, and DIABLO 3!

From what we’ve heard Diablo 3 is going to be an MMO, as massive as World of Warcraft, with the concept of Hell invading Heaven. One rumor going around with Diablo 3 is that there will be Guild Housing included. The game is said to be looking brilliant and will be showcased at Blizzcon as their big suprise.

Wow, a Diablo MMO… Hell invading Heaven? Wow. I don’t know how I’d be able to balance between WoW and this. But, this is still just a rumor. Will be interesting to see what comes from Blizzcon!

One Free Wordpress.com Invite!

Filed under: Journal, Site Updates, Tech News — Matt McDougall @ 10:56 am

Wordpress rocks, and when I found out Wordpress was working on a free service similar to blogspot or xanga, I jumped on and signed up for an invite. Now comes the time when they have chosen me to have an invite, but since I already have my own WP blog, I am going to give it away for free. Who’s cool? Who wants it? Who’s going to actually use it?

Whoever wants it can shoot me an email or contact me via any means that you know. I will need to know what username you want (will also becomes subdomain, username.wordpress.com), the blog’s title (short quip about the blog), and email address (password will be sent to that email). Act fast, this expires in a week.

Its broke. Its not.

For those that only read my xanga, most (if not all) of this will not apply to you. This is only for my main WP site. Today I’ve gone through the CSS and changed a few of the font colors to help make it easier to read, though I’ve still got a bit of tweaking to do to get it to my liking.

- added more books to my sidebar, including recently finished and those I’ve yet to read. Its powered by a pretty spiffy plugin for WP, called Now Reading. Check it out if you use WP.

- added two Netflix feeds by rewriting a small bit of PHP code in the MyNetflix plugin. One that shows the next 10 DVDs in my queue and one that shows the history of the last 10 DVDs, all via RSS.

- added links to xangas that friends use… (psst, xanga blows =P )

- set up a link and Technorati account for ultimate blogging fun. Its kinda like the social aspect of Xanga, only better. Also installed the Bunny’s Technorati Tags plugin to put tags in to certain posts that I feel are link-worthy.

I think that’s about it for now. Later I might add some more stuff, or remove others… whatever happens…. well, it happens. First thing I’m gonna have to do is tweak that CSS so it sits right with me.

end feed.

I love Netflix and all, but Ryan is right, more free movies are good. Time to sign up for a month then cancel. =)

BBC NEWS | Health | Stroke gives woman British accent

Wow, now this is just fucking weird. If that happened to me, I’d want a Russian accent… how ironic would it be for someone to speak in a Russian accent purporting the evils of communism. Okay, not so much anymore, but I still think it would be rad.

fire in the hole

All the good that you discover
In people that you hate
Draw them close and pencil thin
Then they’re easy to erase
You’ve got it down just feed them lines
And watch them starve to death
Keep them crowded and short of air
Then you can take their last breath
I’d rather be insulted by you
Than someone I respect
If I don’t share the same view
It’s just my birth defect
All the good that never comes
From always getting your way
– Helmet – Birth Defect

Its been quite some time since I’ve done a real journal post, so I’ll take a stab at it again. Lately I’ve been listening to a bunch of Helmet. I’m quite surprised I passed this band up so many years ago, they’re awesome. One biographical bit on them compared them as the east-coast’s answer to Soundgarden… and I can see that in them. This is the kind of music I love.

Tonight I’m gonna run into town for a few hours and run some errands. Get a haircut, maybe get a few tools, and get a CD/DVD case and a felt tip marker for piracy purposes. Thank you Netflix. The bank my paychecks from the past few weeks, not because I’m hurting, but because I’m stuffing my bank account fat in order to purchase a car/truck/suv in cash. Gotta pick my bro up from the movies later.

Does anyone read my main site here (not the xanga)? I wonder if they realize they don’t get 100% of my posts on my xanga. I post through different means, and some of the ways gum up the scripting engine and it doesn’t cross-post to my xanga, and I really don’t care enough to dive in to someone else’s code and rewrite it so it works. I’m not adept enough to do so. Hell, I barely know about functions and includes in PHP. MATT MCDOUGALL DOT COM GET IT GOT IT GOOD.

WoW: Burning Crusade Announced!

Filed under: Gaming — Matt McDougall @ 4:25 pm

World of Warcraft’s first expansion has been announced… The Burning Crusade. I had predicted months ago that the Dark Portal would eventually be used to travel to Draenor/Outland, and I was right.

The premise is that the Burning Legion is readying another attack, and its up to you to put a stop to it. If you’ve played WC3, you can figure what’s about to happen. If you’ve played WC2, you know about the Dark Portal.

This expansion sounds pretty sweet, here are some details:

An increase in the level cap to 70
Two new playable races, including the magical Blood Elves
New starting zones in Quel’Thalas and beyond
The entire new continent of Outland, reachable through the Dark Portal
Many new high-level dungeons to explore in Azeroth, Outland, and elsewhere
New flying mounts in Outland
Many new and dangerous monsters, including epic world bosses
Hundreds of new quests
Hundreds of new items
A new profession: Jewelcrafting
Socketed items
And much, much more…

Blood Elves?! Oh yes, I’ll be getting back into this when it comes out. Read more here.

Equilibrium

Filed under: Movies — Matt McDougall @ 7:40 pm

Wow. What a movie. Overall I found this movie to be quite enjoyable. I really do like dystopian stories.

Equilibrium starts off with a bang with Christian Bale playing an elite super soldier in a dystopian future where sense offenders are killed or tortured (sound like 1984?) and their contraband burned (sound like Fahrenheit 451?). The populace keeps their emotions in check by way of a drug that sounds an awful lot like our Prozac (are they trying to say something? also, sound like Brave New World?). The children are apparently trained to spot those who are “feeling”, a la the Junior Anti-Sex League or the Hitler Youth. There’s a Big Brother-like figure. There’s a load of cool action. The police even carry G36s and P90s, how cool is that?

This movie was really good, but I felt it was missing something. Maybe it was that it borrowed so much from 3 of the top dystopian classics and didn’t have all that much to offer on its own. Maybe it was the half-assed direction and special effects in a few scenes. I can’t complain too much, though, I’ve seen far too many movies with over done special effects and direction that couldn’t hold a candle to this movie.

In the end, the faults keep me from giving this a perfect score. I’ll give it a B-
